Summary
Swiss parliamentarians have recommended that voters reject the Swiss People’s Party’s popular initiative titled “No to a ten million Switzerland!”, which seeks to restrict immigration by capping the permanent resident population at ten million. Both chambers of parliament—the House of Representatives and the Senate—argued that the proposal would create more problems than it would solve.

The Senate rejected the initiative as well as counter-proposals put forward by centrist and centre-right parties. Earlier, the House of Representatives had also voted down a centrist counter-proposal. The initiative, submitted in April 2024 with over 114,000 signatures, aims to prevent population growth beyond ten million except through natural increase.
