Summary
Japan is considering a major increase in immigration-related fees, with possible implementation between April 2026 and March 2027. The proposal is still in draft form, but information released on the Liberal Democratic Party’s website indicates substantial hikes across several categories.
The international tourist tax could rise from 1,000 yen to 3,000 yen per departure. The single-entry visa fee is proposed to increase from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen, affecting short-term visitors and business travelers. The largest changes involve residency-related applications, with status changes or renewals rising from 6,000 yen to as much as 40,000 yen, and permanent residence applications increasing from 10,000 yen to over 100,000 yen.
These figures are not yet final and may change through the legislative process. The government presents the increases as a way to align Japan’s fees with international standards and support broader immigration and tourism policy reforms, but the changes could significantly affect both individual applicants and corporate mobility budgets.
