Japan tells U.S. that Biden’s ‘xenophobia’ comment is regrettable
Release Date

Media
The Asahi Shimbun
Summary
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi expressed regret over U.S. President Joe Biden's comment that "xenophobia" in countries like Japan, China, and India is hindering their economic growth. Biden made these remarks during a Washington fundraising event, suggesting that immigration has been key to U.S. economic success while criticizing other nations for their reluctance to welcome immigrants.
Hayashi clarified that Japan had communicated to the U.S. that Biden's statement was based on a misunderstanding of Japan's immigration policy. Despite the controversy, Hayashi emphasized that Japan’s relationship with the U.S. remains strong and will continue to be reinforced.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, in a recent interview, acknowledged Japan's labor shortage due to its declining birthrate and aging population, suggesting the country may consider inviting skilled foreign workers. However, Kishida ruled out a full-scale immigration program, noting some resistance within Japanese society to continuous immigration.
