Immigration and Foreigners Bill not connected to grant of citizenship, says official
Release Date

Media

Summary
The Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, introduced in the Indian Parliament, is not related to granting citizenship but aims to regulate all matters related to foreigners and immigration. The Bill seeks to replace four existing Acts: the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920; the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939; the Foreigners Act, 1946; and the Immigration (Carriers’ Liability) Act, 2000.
The Bill retains several provisions from these Acts while introducing new ones to meet current requirements. Key provisions include the mandatory requirement of valid travel documents for entry, stay, and exit; deportation powers for illegal foreigners; information reporting by hotels, universities, and hospitals to track overstaying foreigners; and the compounding of certain offences to ease compliance. The Bill aims to simplify immigration procedures, improve compliance, and address issues related to illegal immigration while balancing national security and economic growth.
