Summary
The new Digital Nomad Visa for Japan allows foreign nationals employed by overseas companies to work remotely while in Japan without requiring a Certificate of Eligibility (COE), which is normally mandatory for work visas. Applicants can apply directly at the Japanese embassy in their home country. Key criteria include a six-month non-renewable stay limit per 12-month period, proof of an annual income of at least JPY 10 million, and JPY 10 million in insurance coverage for death, injury, or illness during the stay.

Digital Nomad Visa holders are allowed to engage in remote work, in addition to activities permitted on a short-term visa, such as sightseeing, business trips, and participation in events. However, they are ineligible to change to a local employment status in Japan without applying for a regular work visa.

Dependents of Digital Nomad Visa holders from specified countries may accompany them, provided they have similar insurance coverage. Visa holders may also leave and re-enter Japan within their allowed stay period. The streamlined process could expedite entry for employees of foreign companies and allows spouses of seconded employees in Japan to work remotely.

Businesses should stay informed on this new visa category, considering potential tax obligations both in Japan and the applicants home country.
