Indonesian bus driver to be first to work under new Japan visa status

An Indonesian man, Iyus, will be the first to work as a bus driver in Japan under the expanded Specified Skilled Worker No. 1 visa, which now includes the road transportation sector. Having lived in Japan since 2013, he passed the required tests and obtained a large vehicle license, allowing him to start his role in fiscal 2025.

Japan faces a growing shortage of bus drivers, projected to reach 22,000 by 2029, due to its declining birthrate and new work-hour restrictions. To address this, the government expanded the visa in March 2023, allowing up to 24,500 foreign drivers over five years.
