Status of Residence:
Entertainer

Overview

What is Entertainer?

The “Entertainer” residence status in Japan is one of the visa categories granted to foreign nationals engaged in entertainment or sports-related activities. This status applies to individuals who come to Japan for purposes such as performing in films, theater, music, or dance, as well as those participating in sports competitions or providing sports instruction. For example, a foreign actor or singer performing in Japan, or a professional athlete signing with a Japanese team, would fall under this category.

In addition, the scope of this visa is not limited only to performers or athletes. Supporting staff such as directors, choreographers, film crew members, or sports coaches may also qualify under certain conditions. However, in order to obtain this status, the nature of the activities and the contract terms must meet the criteria set by the Immigration Services Agency. It is required that proper remuneration is provided and that the activities do not violate public order or morals.

Furthermore, unlike a tourist visa, the “Entertainer” residence status allows individuals to earn income during their stay in Japan. Therefore, applicants must submit supporting documents such as employment contracts, performance agreements, and letters of invitation to clearly demonstrate the purpose and legitimacy of their activities. With appropriate preparation, foreign nationals can smoothly engage in entertainment or sports activities in Japan under this visa.
