Status of Residence:
Business Manager

Overview

What is Business Manager?

The status of residence called “Business Manager” is one of Japan’s work-related residence statuses under the Immigration Control Act. It is granted to foreign nationals who establish and operate a company in Japan or who take part in managing an existing business. This visa is designed for entrepreneurs, investors, and corporate managers. Simply owning a company is not sufficient—active involvement in the management or administration of the business is required.

To qualify, applicants must meet certain conditions. For example, they need to secure an independent office space to serve as the company’s business base. In addition, they must either employ at least two full-time staff members in Japan or invest a certain minimum amount of capital into the business. The submitted business plan must also be realistic and demonstrate the potential for sustainable operations. As a result, applicants are expected to show evidence of their managerial capability and financial backing.

By obtaining the “Business Manager” visa, foreign nationals can legally establish and run companies in Japan, thereby participating in the country’s economy. For Japan, accepting foreign entrepreneurs and managers contributes to economic revitalization, job creation, and the promotion of international business exchange. In this way, the “Business Manager” status plays an important role in supporting Japan’s economic competitiveness in the global market.
