Status of Residence:
Nursing care

Overview

What is Nursing care?

The “Nursing Care” residence status is a visa category for foreign nationals who have obtained a Japanese national qualification as a certified care worker (kaigo-fukushishi) and wish to engage in nursing care services in Japan. This status was introduced to address the growing shortage of workers in the nursing care field, a challenge brought about by Japan’s rapidly aging society. Only those who have acquired the national certification are eligible; in principle, those without the qualification cannot obtain this status.

Holders of this status are allowed to work in facilities such as special nursing homes for the elderly, geriatric health service facilities, and support facilities for persons with disabilities. Their duties include assisting with daily activities such as bathing, eating, and toileting, as well as providing general support for daily living. In addition, communication with users and their families to improve quality of life is also an important part of the role. Thus, the “Nursing Care” residence status plays a crucial role in enabling professionals with specialized knowledge and skills to support the daily lives of people in need.

By obtaining this status, certified foreign care workers can build stable careers in Japan and work in the nursing care sector on a long-term basis. For the industry, this status helps alleviate chronic labor shortages and supports the provision of high-quality care. As Japan continues to experience rapid aging, the system is expected to contribute significantly to the sustainable development of the nursing care field.
