Overview

What is Student?

The "Student" residence status (在留資格「留学」) in Japan refers to a type of visa granted to foreign nationals who intend to stay in Japan for the purpose of studying at an educational institution. This includes a wide range of schools such as elementary schools, universities, vocational schools, and Japanese language schools. To apply for this visa, documents such as an admission letter and proof of financial resources are required.

Once granted, the Student visa allows the individual to stay in Japan for a mid- to long-term period to pursue their studies as the main purpose of residence. With special permission, students are also allowed to engage in part-time work under certain conditions, provided that it does not interfere with their studies. This permission is called "Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted."

This residence status can be extended or changed depending on the duration and nature of the study. However, if the individual is found to be engaging in activities outside the permitted scope, their visa may be revoked. Therefore, it is important for students to fully understand the rules of their residence status and act accordingly. To make the most of their study experience in Japan, a proper understanding of the system is essential.
