Status of Residence:
Dependent

Overview

What is Dependent?

The "Status of Residence: Dependent" is a residence status granted to family members, such as spouses and children, of foreign nationals residing in Japan. This status allows family members to live together in Japan for a certain period. It is mainly intended for families of foreign nationals who are in Japan for work, study, or other authorized activities, aiming to support family stability during their stay.

Foreign nationals holding the "Dependent" status are generally not permitted to work in Japan. However, under certain conditions, they can obtain permission for activities outside their status, such as part-time jobs, within a limited scope. The period of stay for dependents is tied to that of the principal resident, so when the principal resident leaves Japan, it is common for the dependents to return as well.

This status is designed to ensure that families of foreign residents can live comfortably and maintain family bonds while adapting to life in Japan. When applying for this status, documents proving the relationship with the principal resident and evidence of living arrangements are required.
