This status of residence has been established with more relaxed activity restrictions than other general work statuses in order to further promote the acceptance of foreigners with highly specialized skills who are expected to contribute to academic research and economic development in Japan. The status of residence for "Highly Skilled Professional No. 1" is granted to those who have reached a certain total point in the points system for highly skilled professionals, in which points are assigned to each item such as academic background, work history, and annual income.
