Summary
Belgium’s new Migration Minister, Anneleen Van Bossuyt, is set to implement the toughest immigration measures yet. Her plans include stricter requirements for all migrants—whether asylum seekers or those seeking family reunification—as well as enhanced border controls. The new policies aim not only to limit the number of people entering Belgium but also to increase the removal of those who stay illegally and pose a threat to public order, including by doubling the capacity of closed detention centres.

The minister has raised concerns about issues like human trafficking and the high volume of asylum requests—half of which may come from people already granted protection in another country. Other measures will tighten family reunification by imposing stricter income limits and make social assistance more challenging to obtain through mandatory language and integration tests (conducted in the applicants’ home countries) and extended waiting periods. Moreover, Belgium will no longer adhere to the Dublin agreement by refusing to shelter those who have already applied for asylum or received protection in another EU Member State.
