Summary
Starting in June, Japan will enforce a new rule under the revised Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Law, limiting foreign nationals to three asylum applications. Individuals who are rejected three times will be subject to deportation, even amid concerns this may lead to persecution in their home countries. Currently, Japan prohibits deportation while applications are pending, but authorities believe some individuals use repeated applications to extend their stay in Japan.

The government hopes the change will reduce long-term detentions in immigration facilities and ensure compliance with deportation orders. Justice Minister Ryuji Koizumi noted that the revised law aims to create an inclusive society with clear rules and stated that the law's impact will be monitored closely. Additionally, from June 10, a new measure will allow some asylum seekers to live with family or supporters in the community instead of being detained.
