Summary
Myint Myint Aye, a 28-year-old woman from Myanmar, was granted refugee status in Japan after applying in September 2023 due to political persecution. She came to Japan as a technical intern in 2019 and has been actively involved in advocating for democracy in Myanmar, including giving lectures and leading fundraising efforts.

The 2021 military coup in Myanmar, which overthrew the democratically elected government, made it dangerous for Myint Myint Aye to return home. In 2022, her mother, aged 55, and brother, aged 20, were killed by the national army for supporting anti-government groups.

Visiting the Nagoya Regional Immigration Bureau to receive her refugee certificate, she expressed her joy and determination to continue her efforts for a peaceful Myanmar from abroad. In 2022, 298 Myanmar nationals applied for refugee status in Japan, with 26 being granted it.
