Summary
A construction company in Kakamigahara, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, Concrete Pump Ltd., is addressing labor shortages by training foreign workers to obtain the "Specified Skilled Worker (ii)" visa, which allows them to work indefinitely in Japan. This visa requires expert-level skills, and workers like Weng Fei, who was the first to earn the Specified Skilled Worker No. 2 visa, serve as foremen, managing large teams and overseeing construction projects.

Weng, originally from China, came to Japan in 2010 and advanced from an unskilled "technical training intern" to a skilled worker after passing a challenging vocational test. He obtained the No. 2 visa in 2022, which also allowed his family to join him in Japan, easing his loneliness. The company encourages its foreign employees to pursue this visa and offers rewards, pay raises, and support for their families, including assistance with Japanese language learning and settling in.

Concrete Pump faces a labor shortage due to Japan’s aging population and the difficulty of retaining young Japanese workers. The company has a high success rate for foreign employees obtaining the No. 2 visa, with 11 workers in total holding this status. Of the company’s 25 employees, half are foreign nationals, and many are expected to play a larger role in management in the future.

Company president Taketo Kano is focused on developing foreign workers as key members of the workforce to ensure the company's long-term success.
