Further changes to the immigration system announced

Summary
The UK government has announced further updates to the immigration system as part of implementing measures from the Immigration White Paper. These changes will affect sectors such as the NHS, particularly in the recruitment and employment of individuals who require Home Office authorization to live and work in the UK.

Key updates include:

SOC 6131 (nursing auxiliaries and assistants): The definition will be expanded. Previously limited to environments with registered nurses, it will now include workplaces where registered nurses or other registered healthcare professionals are employed.

Immigration Skills Charge: From 16 December 2025, the charge will increase by 32% to £1,320 per person per year.

English Language Requirement: From 8 January 2026, the minimum English proficiency level for Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual (HPI), and Scale-Up visas will rise from B1 to B2.

Graduate Visa Reform: From 1 January 2027, the length of stay for Graduate Visa holders will be reduced from two years to 18 months, while PhD graduates will continue to receive a three-year visa.

Additional updates will affect HPI and Global Talent visas, as well as suitability criteria for Family and Private Life visas.

The Home Office has published the full statement of changes on GOV.UK. NHS Employers will host a webinar with the Home Office on 13 November to discuss the Immigration White Paper rule changes, and registration is available on the NHS Employers website.
