Summary
Taiwan’s National Immigration Agency (NIA) has reported about 50 individuals to household registration offices for cancellation of their Taiwanese household status after confirming they also held household registration or passports in China. The investigation is part of President Lai Ching-te’s broader national security strategy to address Chinese “united front” influence activities.

Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior previously stated that Taiwanese citizens found possessing a Chinese ID card will have their Taiwanese ID, passport, and national health insurance canceled.

Separately, around 12,000 former Chinese nationals residing in Taiwan have been required to provide proof that they have given up their Chinese household registration. As of late October, about 95% of these cases have been processed, with most having submitted documentation.

The NIA also noted that 16 Chinese nationals who obtained Taiwanese identity through marriage have voluntarily given up their Taiwanese status, often to access social benefits or inheritance rights in China, or after the death of their Taiwanese spouse.
