American Tourists Warned Of Denied Boarding Under New Immigration Rules In Japan

Summary: Japan plans to introduce a new pre-travel authorization system called JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization) starting in 2028, targeting travelers from 74 visa-exempt countries such as the United States and Canada.

Under JESTA, travelers who currently can enter Japan without a visa for short stays will need to apply online in advance. They must provide information such as passport details, travel purpose, accommodation, and travel dates. Until JESTA is implemented, visa-free travel (up to 90 days) remains unchanged. While details such as fees (estimated at $10–$30) and the exact launch date are not yet finalized, the system reflects Japan’s move toward stricter but more efficient border control.
