Summary
On January 25, 2024, Japan's Immigration Services Agency held a class at Kawaguchi Municipal Zaike Elementary School in Saitama to promote understanding of coexistence with foreigners. The class, attended by fifth- and sixth-grade students, as well as parents and local citizens, highlighted the growing number of foreign residents in Japan and introduced a "residence support" program launched in 2019. The agency also shared initiatives like a multilingual guidebook for foreign residents.

During the class, students practiced using "easy Japanese" to communicate more effectively with foreigners, focusing on clear and simple language. Sixth-grader Masato Kitajima expressed his intention to speak in easy Japanese to foreign classmates. Kawaguchi, known for its large foreign population (about 8% of its 600,000 residents), has about 50 foreign children at Zaike Elementary School. The class was part of the Immigration Services Agency's awareness efforts, held during January, which is designated as awareness month for coexistence with foreign residents.

Canada's fiscal targets are becoming harder to achieve due to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's recent promise of a Christmas handout and immigration cuts that are expected to reduce economic growth. Other pressures include increased defense spending commitments, potential U.S. tariffs, and election-year spending temptations.

The issue of immigration has been a target for misinformation across Europe, including in Portugal. André Ventura, leader of the far-right Chega party, has linked immigration to rising crime, claiming that 20% of Portugal's prisoners and 30% of arrests involve foreigners. However, official data shows discrepancies with these claims.
