Trump eases rules for hiring temporary immigration judges

Summary
The Trump administration has implemented a new rule that loosens the qualifications for hiring temporary immigration judges. Previously, such judges needed prior experience as immigration judges or at least ten years of immigration law practice. Under the new rule, the Justice Department can appoint attorneys without immigration law experience to these positions.

The administration argues the change is necessary to address the growing backlog of immigration cases, which has reached about 3.7 million. Since Trump took office, around 100 immigration judges have been fired or forced to resign, reducing the total number to about 650.

Because immigration judges are part of the executive branch—not the independent judiciary—the administration has more authority to change hiring rules. The Justice Department claims this flexibility will help appoint qualified judges and reduce delays in the system.
