Data on sweeping immigrant detentions underscores US bishops’ concerns, says policy expert

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said they support enforcement focused on individuals who pose real threats to public safety, but criticized what they describe as indiscriminate mass deportation driven by numerical targets. They warned that such an approach undermines due process, threatens family unity, and fosters discrimination.

Catholic social teaching, they noted, balances three principles: the right to migrate, the right of nations to control their borders, and the duty to do so with justice and compassion. The bishops emphasized that respect for human dignity and the rule of law are not in conflict, and called for meaningful immigration reform to ensure policies align with core values and protect vulnerable people and families.
