Illegal visa overstayers in Japan drop to 71,000

Summary
Japan’s Immigration Services Agency announced that as of the latest count, 71,229 foreigners are illegally staying in Japan, a decrease of 3,634 from six months earlier.

By nationality, Vietnam ranks first with about 13,000 overstayers, followed by Thailand and South Korea. In terms of visa category, the largest group falls under “Temporary Visitor” (mainly tourists) with about 43,000 people, followed by Technical Intern Training, Designated Activities, and Student visas.

All of the top 10 nationalities saw a decline in numbers. The total number of illegal overstayers peaked at around 298,000 in 1993, dropped to 59,000 in 2014, and has remained stable at around 70,000 in recent years.

The top nationalities are as follows:

Vietnam: 13,070 (-1,226)

Thailand: 10,924 (-413)

South Korea: 10,286 (-314)

China: 6,252 (-313)

Philippines: 4,575 (-109)

Indonesia: 4,344 (-287)

Taiwan: 2,738 (-245)

Sri Lanka: 2,005 (-38)

Turkey: 1,292 (-80)

Cambodia: 1,161 (-219)

The Agency said that Middle Eastern and Arab nationals are grouped under “others,” which accounts for 20.5% of all illegal residents, and that detailed breakdowns are not disclosed. It also noted that Turkey has replaced Cambodia as the ninth-largest group of illegal overstayers.
