Summary
A nationwide Asahi Shimbun survey found strong support for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s tougher immigration policies, with 66% viewing them positively and 24% expressing concern. A majority of respondents (56%) said Japan should accept fewer visitors and immigrants, while 26% favored more.

Support for stricter policies was highest among those who want fewer foreigners (80%), and lower among those who support increasing immigration. Younger generations—especially people in their 30s to 50s—were more supportive of the new policies, while those 70 and older showed less support and greater concern.

Political affiliation strongly influenced views. Large majorities of supporters of the Liberal Democratic Party, Sanseito, the Democratic Party for the People, and Nippon Ishin backed the tougher measures. In contrast, more than half of Constitutional Democratic Party supporters expressed reservations and were more open to accepting more foreigners. Komeito supporters were split, with around half supporting the policies.

Gender differences were modest, but men were slightly more open to increasing foreign residents. Regionally, Osaka showed the strongest opposition to more foreigners.

The survey also found high approval for the Takaichi Cabinet at 69%, and attitudes toward immigration closely reflected respondents’ opinions of Takaichi’s leadership.
