Summary
New international student enrollment in U.S. colleges dropped 17% in fall 2025, the steepest non-pandemic decline in more than a decade, according to the Institute of International Education. Universities overwhelmingly cited visa delays (96%) and travel restrictions (68%) as major barriers. Many institutions also said prospective students felt unwelcome in the U.S. or were troubled by the country’s political and social climate, including anti-immigrant rhetoric from leaders.

NAFSA’s CEO warned that the U.S. is becoming less competitive globally as students struggle to secure visas. The group estimated an economic loss of $1.1 billion tied to the decline, noting that international students—who typically pay higher tuition—help keep domestic tuition lower.

International students contributed nearly $43 billion to the U.S. economy and supported over 355,000 jobs in 2024–25. Many also work in critical fields such as medicine in underserved areas, meaning the current immigration crackdown could lead to future labor shortages in essential professions.
