Summary
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced several important changes affecting visa processing, employer accreditation, and wage requirements from 2026. Visa processing times have generally become faster due to improved internal systems, including quicker job checks and employer accreditations. While this benefits workforce planning, employers are expected to submit fully accurate and complete applications, as errors may still cause delays.

At the same time, INZ has increased scrutiny in job checks and accreditation processes, particularly for repeat accreditations and post-decision reviews. Employers are being more closely assessed on whether they have properly engaged with Work and Income, with recent reviews showing that around 15% failed to meet this requirement adequately.

From 1 April 2026, New Zealand’s minimum wage will rise to NZD 23.95 per hour. All Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) applications submitted on or after that date must comply with the new wage threshold, regardless of when the job offer was made. Failure to meet the requirement may result in visa refusals.

INZ has also indicated that employer re-accreditation standards may change following audit findings. As a result, employers are advised to strengthen compliance procedures, document recruitment and onboarding steps carefully, and monitor accreditation timelines to avoid disruptions in their ability to hire migrant workers.
