(Hong Kong Business)Employers seek broader immigration reforms

Summary
Hong Kong has extended the advance filing period for employment and dependent visa renewals from four weeks to three months before expiry. The change is expected to reduce the risk of work disruptions by giving employers more time to prepare applications, respond to requests for additional information, and avoid situations where employees must stop working while awaiting renewal approval.
However, employers must still demonstrate that foreign workers continue to meet all visa requirements. Companies are encouraged to use the extra time to review any changes in job duties, salary levels, or sponsoring entities that could affect renewal eligibility. Businesses that employ large numbers of overseas workers, particularly in sectors such as engineering, are expected to benefit most from the new policy.
Business groups and immigration specialists argue that further reforms are needed to attract and retain international talent. Suggested measures include greater flexibility for internal job transfers, a unified digital immigration platform, faster visa processing, and changes to rules that require some applicants to be physically present in Hong Kong before receiving electronic visas.
