Summary
Japan’s foreign resident population reached a record 3.22 million in mid-2023, rising by 148,645 since the end of 2022, due to increased labor demand amid a shortage of domestic workers. The largest resident group was permanent residents (880,178), with notable growth in technical interns (358,159, up 10.2%) and specified skilled workers (173,101, up 32.2%).
Chinese nationals formed the largest foreign group, followed by Vietnamese and South Koreans.
Meanwhile, Japan saw 10.15 million foreign entries in the first half of 2023, nearly 70% of pre-pandemic levels, due to relaxed COVID-19 border restrictions. Japanese departures also rose to 3.61 million. As of July, 79,101 foreign nationals were recorded as overstaying their visas.
