Summary
In early 2024, Japans foreign resident population reached a record high of over 3.5 million, reflecting an increase of 177,964 since the end of 2023, according to the Immigration Services Agency. This growth is part of Japans strategy to address labor shortages caused by an aging population and low birthrate. The number of specified skilled workers, allowed to work in designated industries since 2019, rose by 20.8 percent to 251,747. Additionally, technical trainees grew by 5.2 percent to 425,714, while permanent residents, the largest group of foreign residents, increased to 902,203. Tourist arrivals in Japan also surged, totaling 17.8 million in the first half of 2024.
