SWITZERLAND – 2025 quotas for new work permit applications are announced.

Summary: On November 27, 2024, Switzerland's Federal Council announced that the quotas for work permits in 2025 will remain the same for non-EU/EFTA nationals, service providers/seconded workers based in the EU/EFTA, and UK nationals. The quotas are as follows:

Non-EU/EFTA nationals: 4,000 L short-term permits, 4,500 B long-term permits
EU/EFTA and UK service providers/seconded workers: 3,000 L short-term permits, 500 B long-term permits
UK nationals: 1,400 L short-term permits, 2,100 B long-term permits
Starting January 1, 2025, Croatian nationals will benefit from full freedom of movement and will no longer be subject to quota limitations.

In recent years, quotas for non-EU/EFTA nationals were underutilized, with only 78% of permits issued in 2023. The quotas for EU/EFTA service providers and UK nationals were also not fully used, with the UK quotas reaching just 24% by October 2024.

Employers are advised to avoid waiting until the end of the year to submit important applications, consider reducing short-term assignments to under 120 days to bypass quota restrictions, notify authorities if a granted work permit will not be used, and promote Swiss local employment contracts instead of secondment arrangements for EU/EFTA nationals. For specific advice, employers are encouraged to consult with an immigration specialist.
