Summary
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted a significant increase in illegal immigration into Assam following political changes in Bangladesh in 2024. He stated that all intercepted immigrants were Muslims, with no Hindu immigrants detected. The rise in immigration is attributed to economic disruptions in Bangladesh's textile industry, leading workers to seek employment in India, often encouraged by local textile manufacturers seeking cheap labor. Sarma noted that most infiltrators are from the majority community in Bangladesh, and no Hindu Bangladeshis have been detected in Assam in the past five months.

He emphasized that around 1,000 infiltrators have been detained and sent back in 2024. Sarma also mentioned that this issue was discussed in meetings with other Northeast states and raised with the Union Home Ministry. Despite concerns about minority targeting in Bangladesh, he stated that India should not encourage the immigration of people who have strong ties to Bangladesh, stressing the importance of security in Bangladesh itself.
