Trump's executive orders on immigration explained

Summary
The U.S. should welcome immigrants with dignity and protect their rights, but since President Donald Trump took office, his administration has implemented policies that endanger immigrants' lives, violate their rights, and harm families and communities. The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), guided by Quaker values, opposes these anti-immigrant policies and works with others who recognize that immigrants strengthen communities. A 2024 poll shows that 74% of Americans want a welcoming immigration system.
Key aspects of the Trump administration's immigration policies include:
Expanding deportations: Punitive measures against sanctuary cities and localities that refuse to cooperate with ICE, putting families at risk of separation.
Raids in sensitive areas: ICE can now raid schools, hospitals, and places of worship, deterring immigrants from seeking help.
Shutting down the U.S.-Mexico border: Plans to deny asylum seekers and the reinstatement of the "Remain in Mexico" policy, stranding migrants.
Suspending refugee admissions: The refugee program was suspended, leaving thousands stranded, including Afghan allies who fear for their lives.
Ending birthright citizenship: Executive orders attempting to revoke citizenship for U.S.-born children of immigrants, which is constitutionally protected.
AFSC calls for relentless efforts to keep families together, protect human rights, and build a just and welcoming future.
