How Trump 2.0 Immigration Policies Could Strain Modi’s U.S. Strategy

Summary
A majority of Indian citizens view the United States positively and believe that closer ties with the Trump administration will benefit India. However, Trump's immigration policies could negatively impact U.S.-India relations by disrupting the strong people-to-people connections between the two nations. Specifically, restrictions on H-1B visas and the mass deportation of undocumented Indians could create political pressure on Prime Minister Modi and reduce India's cooperation with the U.S. on trade and other strategic matters.
H-1B visas have been crucial for the success of the Indian American community, and any restrictions on the program have drawn significant attention in India. Meanwhile, the deportation of undocumented Indians—many from Modi’s home state of Gujarat and politically sensitive Punjab—poses another challenge, with concerns over their treatment potentially fueling domestic criticism.
To maintain stable relations, both countries should seek common ground by adjusting H-1B policies, prioritizing visas in strategic sectors like AI, and fostering collaboration in critical technologies. Additionally, joint efforts to combat human trafficking and improve visa processing efficiency at U.S. consulates in India could help reduce illegal migration.
To prevent immigration issues from straining broader U.S.-India ties, proactive measures are needed. By addressing these challenges collaboratively, both nations can sustain their growing partnership while managing potential conflicts effectively.
