UNITED KINGDOM – Home Office issues new Immigration Rules Statement of Changes

Summary: On March 12, 2025, the UK Home Office issued new immigration rule changes, with several key updates to visa categories. From 3 p.m. on March 12, 2025, nationals of Trinidad and Tobago will require a UK visitor visa, as they are removed from the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. A six-week transition period will allow those with confirmed travel bookings to enter the UK without a visa until April 23, 2025. Additionally, they will need a direct airside transit visa for UK airport transit, unless exceptions apply.

The minimum salary for the Skilled Worker visa will increase from £23,200 to £25,000 annually, and there will be adjustments to salaries in healthcare and education sectors. Sponsors of care workers must attempt to recruit from the existing pool of overseas workers in the UK before hiring new workers from abroad.

Changes to the Ukraine schemes will require parents to be lawfully resident in the UK if they are joined by a child from April 9, 2025. Stepparents will be excluded from the definition of "parent" in the Homes for Ukraine Scheme.

For the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS), non-EEA applicants can use a UK-issued biometric residence card up to 18 months past its expiration date as proof of identity and nationality. Those who became EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens after the transition period can no longer sponsor EUSS family permit applications.

The ETA scheme will no longer apply to Trinidad and Tobago nationals starting April 2, 2025. Children visiting the UK as part of a French school group will not need an ETA. From April 9, 2025, British Nationals (Overseas) will also be removed from the list of nationalities requiring an ETA.

New provisions for Child Student visas include updated guardian requirements and living arrangement categories. The Administrative Review process will also be expanded to include in-country cases where errors are found in visa decisions.

Lastly, a "genuine intention to study" requirement has been added to the Short-Term Study (English Language) category.
