Summary
Portugal's upcoming election has put immigration policy at the center of political debate. The center-right ruling coalition, the Democratic Alliance (AD), is promoting a "regulated and humane" approach to immigration as an alternative to the far-right Chega party’s harsh anti-immigrant stance.

Immigration Minister António Leitão Amaro blames the previous Socialist government’s “open doors” policy for the recent surge in immigration and says his party offers a firm but fair solution. Measures include tightening entry rules, speeding up residency applications, and issuing voluntary return orders for about 40,000 people.

Chega, led by André Ventura, continues to link immigration with crime despite lacking evidence. Ventura claims the government is too soft and continues to target minority groups like the Roma.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has ruled out any alliance with Chega. Although his party is expected to win the most votes, it may fall short of a majority, potentially leading to another fragile minority government.

Experts warn that using immigration as a political tool risks reinforcing far-right narratives, even as mainstream parties try to strike a balance between control and compassion.
