Immigration Impact
Summary
Between 2018 and 2023, immigrants were a major driver of population growth in the United States’ largest metropolitan areas, accounting for over 42% of total growth. In cities like Seattle, New York, and Scranton, over 80% of population increases were due to immigration. Immigrants now make up at least one in six residents in these regions, playing a critical role in sustaining local populations, especially in areas where the U.S.-born population is declining.
In several metro areas, such as Baltimore and Detroit, the growth in the immigrant population completely offset what would have been overall population loss. Regions that previously had small immigrant communities also saw rapid growth, indicating a broader national trend.
Immigrants are significantly contributing to key sectors, particularly healthcare, where they are helping address shortages in nursing and eldercare. In 2023, immigrants made up a larger share of the working-age population than U.S.-born individuals and were overrepresented in essential jobs. Their high employment rate and labor force participation translated into substantial tax contributions—over $577 billion in total—and $1.5 trillion in spending power.
Immigrants are also prominent entrepreneurs and innovators. Nearly 30% of business owners in major metros were immigrants, and they are heavily represented in STEM fields, especially in technology hubs like San Jose and San Francisco.
Overall, the data highlights immigrants as indispensable to the economic, demographic, and social health of U.S. cities. As immigration policy debates continue, recognizing and supporting their contributions remains crucial for the country’s future stability and growth.
