(AL HAKAM)Unpacking Australia’s anti-immigration protests

Summary
Immigration has become a contentious issue in Western countries, including Australia, where large-scale anti-immigration protests took place on 31 August 2025. Organised by the group March for Australia, the protests expressed concerns over cultural erosion, distrust in government, and the strain of mass migration on national unity. While some protesters held extreme views, such as neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell promoting "remigration" of non-white Australians, others pointed to issues like the housing crisis as a reason to limit immigration.
However, there is no academic consensus that immigration is the main cause of Australia’s housing problems; rather, slow housing development and regulatory issues play a bigger role. Still, immigration is often used as a scapegoat in public discourse.
In contrast, a balanced view was expressed by Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih V, who in a 2016 address in Sweden emphasized that immigrants should live peacefully, obey the law, and contribute positively to their new homeland. His comments highlight the mutual responsibilities of both immigrants and host communities in maintaining harmony.
