(ABC NEWS)Indians in Australia continue to face racist abuse one month on from anti-immigration protests
Release Date

Media
ABC NEWS
Summary
Following the “March for Australia” anti-immigration protests, members of the Indian community in Australia have reported heightened fear of racist abuse and attacks. Nayonika Bhattacharya in Sydney described being targeted with racial slurs in public, and other Indian Australians, including social media creators, report similar harassment and death threats.
The protests included flyers and messaging that specifically singled out Indians, spreading misinformation and white supremacist content. While police statistics do not show a confirmed rise in reported incidents, authorities emphasize the importance of reporting racial abuse.
Experts stress the need for “racial literacy” education to help communities understand and address racism, and highlight that protecting minorities should not rely solely on affected communities but also involve human rights organizations and political leaders. Australia’s Racial Discrimination Act prohibits unfair treatment based on race or ethnicity, and the Human Rights Commission received 144 complaints of racial hatred in 2024–25. The Indian community continues to call for stronger protections and measures against both online and offline racism.
