Summary
Across Australia, rallies were held for the “March for Australia” movement, which protests against mass immigration, and counter-protests promoting pro-immigration and anti-racism messages. Compared to the large demonstrations in August, turnout was significantly lower nationwide. In Sydney, around 5,000 people joined the March for Australia rally, while about 200 attended the counter-protest. In Melbourne, both sides drew around 800 to 1,000 participants, and other cities saw gatherings ranging from a few dozen to a few thousand people.
Victorian police reported that about 40 to 50 “professional protesters” attended the Melbourne event looking for confrontation. Two police officers were injured and hospitalized, and one person was arrested for allegedly assaulting an officer, with more arrests expected. Overall, while the protests were smaller and less intense than before, they highlighted the ongoing social tension in Australia over immigration and national identity.
