Summary
Canada has introduced new immigration measures to boost its healthcare workforce and make it easier for international doctors in Canada to obtain permanent residence. Starting in early 2026, IRCC will launch a new Express Entry category for international doctors who have at least one year of recent Canadian work experience in eligible medical occupations.

The government will also allocate 5,000 additional permanent residence admission spaces for provinces and territories to nominate licensed physicians with job offers—separate from their existing Provincial Nominee Program quotas. This significantly increases provincial capacity to select foreign-trained doctors.

Nominated physicians will receive expedited work permit processing, expected to take around 14 days, allowing them to begin or continue working while their permanent residence applications are being reviewed.

Further details on the program and any updates to the 2026 Express Entry category-based selection process will be released by IRCC as implementation progresses.
