Summary
Permanent residents in Canada who apply for citizenship typically face a processing time of about 13 months, meaning a wait of more than one year. However, in what Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) considers “exceptional cases,” applicants may be eligible for urgent processing.

Examples of exceptional cases include:

Needing Canadian citizenship to obtain or keep a job;

A family emergency, such as death or serious illness, requiring travel when the applicant cannot obtain a passport from their current country of nationality;

Receiving a favorable federal court decision on an appeal related to a previous citizenship application.
Other situations may also qualify if IRCC determines they are exceptional.

Even if an applicant meets these criteria, urgent processing is not guaranteed, and IRCC cannot promise completion within a specific timeframe. If the request does not meet the exceptional case standard, the application will be processed under normal procedures.

To request urgent processing before applying, the applicant must submit the citizenship application by mail along with a written explanation and supporting documents, and clearly mark the envelope with “Request Urgent Processing.”
If the application has already been submitted, the applicant can request expedited processing through IRCC’s online web form by providing an explanation and supporting documentation.
