Catholic bishop says Trump's immigration policies are a 'great source of sadness'

Summary
Mark Seitz, the Catholic bishop of El Paso, said on Christmas Day that the Trump administration’s immigration policies conflict with core Christian values. Drawing on his experience in a border community, he emphasized that migrants are acting to protect their families and escape danger, and that their stories are fundamentally human and relatable.
He argued that Christian faith calls believers to welcome strangers and care for the poor, without limiting compassion by nationality. Citing biblical teachings, he said faith should guide the nation’s conscience rather than be separated from public policy. He also criticized negative media narratives that portray immigrants as dangerous, noting that immigrant communities are generally less associated with crime than native-born ones.
Seitz observed that El Paso’s residents, who often embrace both American identity and Mexican heritage, tend not to view migrants as a threat. Over the past year, he has heard many people say the scale and impact of mass deportations go beyond what they expected or supported. While acknowledging the need for an orderly immigration system and accountability for criminal behavior, he warned that widespread deportations are disrupting communities and exceed what many Americans wanted.
