(Fragomen)Australia: New Restrictions Introduced for Arrival of Certain Temporary Visa Holders; Iranian Visitors Affected
Release Date

Summary
Effective March 14, 2026, Australia introduced new legislation allowing the Minister for Immigration to impose temporary travel restrictions on specific groups of temporary visa holders through “arrival control determinations,” based on national interest and with approval from the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.
The first measure restricts Iranian Visitor (Subclass 600) visa holders outside Australia from entering the country for six months. However, visas remain valid and can be used after the restriction ends if still within validity.
Certain groups are exempt, including family members of Australian citizens or permanent residents, humanitarian visa holders, and individuals already in Australia. Case-by-case exemptions may also be granted for compassionate or public interest reasons.
This new framework enables broader, class-based travel restrictions alongside existing visa cancellation powers, allowing the government to respond more quickly to international developments and migration pressures.
