Summary
Australian opposition leader Angus Taylor outlined a conservative policy platform focused on reducing migration, boosting housing construction, cutting taxes, and increasing defence spending during his budget reply speech. He argued that the country must restore living standards and “put Australians first.”
A key proposal is to cap net overseas migration at the number of new homes built in the previous year. The Coalition also plans to tighten temporary migration rules, deport 70,000 visa overstayers, and restrict welfare benefits such as JobSeeker and disability support to Australian citizens only.
Economically, Taylor proposed indexing income tax brackets to inflation to reduce “bracket creep,” along with a A$5 billion Housing Infrastructure Fund aimed at supporting the construction of 400,000 new homes.
On energy policy, the Coalition pledged to lift the ban on nuclear power and continue supporting coal-fired energy generation. Taylor also committed to raising defence spending to at least 3 per cent of GDP and creating a new national security strategy. Overall, the speech emphasized immigration control, national priorities, and economic reform.
