(The Guardian)Escapes, fires, stabbing: catastrophic security failures revealed in Australia’s immigration detention network

Summary
Australia’s immigration detention system has faced serious security and safety failures since US private prison company MTC, operating locally as Secure Journeys, took over management in 2025. More than a dozen escapes or attempted escapes have occurred, including high-risk detainees fleeing during hospital transfers. Staff shortages and poor procedures have also led to detainees missing medical treatment.
Investigations found that workers lacked proper fire-response training and equipment, resulting in staff hospitalizations after a detention-center fire. Federal safety regulator Comcare warned that MTC’s “minimalist staffing model” was putting both staff and detainees at serious risk and launched a dedicated inspection program.
Conditions inside detention centers have reportedly deteriorated, with some detainees sleeping in common areas after fires damaged rooms. Critics say the centers are being run “like prisons” and accuse the company of chronic understaffing and incompetence.
Despite mounting criticism, the Australian government faces difficulty replacing MTC because of the high cost and limited alternative contractors. Human rights advocates have also raised concerns that blanket handcuff policies for detainee transfers may be unlawful.
