Government restoring order to “broken” immigration system

Summary
The UK government has reinforced its commitment to reducing historically high levels of net migration, which has risen nearly fivefold in four years to a record one million, remaining four times higher than pre-pandemic levels. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced measures to curb over-reliance on overseas recruitment and focus on training the domestic workforce.
Efforts include visa controls, accelerating asylum decisions, and increasing removals of foreign offenders and illegal immigrants. Deportations of foreign criminals have risen by 25% compared to last year, with offenders guilty of serious crimes being removed. Measures to restore the broken asylum system have also seen asylum decisions and interviews increase since July 2024.
The government will crack down on employers who violate visa rules, revoking their sponsorship licenses. Additionally, the introduction of electronic travel authorizations (ETAs) from January 2025 aims to enhance border security and streamline travel processes for eligible visitors.
