Canada tightens immigration rules: Study, work permits now easier to revoke

The revised framework allows immigration officers to cancel study and work permits if the permit holder obtains permanent residency, passes away, or if the permit was issued due to an administrative error. Additionally, electronic Travel Authorizations (eTAs) and Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs) are now subject to stricter scrutiny, with officials authorized to revoke them in cases involving criminal records, security risks, misrepresentation, or changes in the applicant’s eligibility.

The tightening of immigration rules comes in response to increasing concerns over fraudulent study permits and unauthorized stays. By closing loopholes that previously allowed individuals to retain permits obtained through misrepresentation, the government seeks to strengthen immigration enforcement. Furthermore, the new regulations empower officials to cancel permits reported as lost, stolen, or misused, thereby reinforcing border security.

Through these regulatory changes, Canada aims to curb the exploitation of study permits, enhance immigration enforcement, and prevent overstays while maintaining the credibility of its temporary residence programs.
