Summary
A new National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) study warns that President Trump’s immigration enforcement policies could shrink the U.S. workforce by 15.7 million people by 2035 and reduce GDP by $12.1 trillion over the next decade. The report attributes this decline to stricter measures on both illegal and legal immigration, including the 2025 travel ban, cuts to refugee admissions, termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), restrictions on Optional Practical Training (OPT) for international students, and other legal immigration limits.

NFAP also projects that these policies will increase the federal debt by $1.74 trillion, as reduced labor force growth slows the economy. The Trump administration’s plan to deport up to 1 million undocumented immigrants annually and invest $45 billion to expand ICE detention capacity could further exacerbate workforce shortages, particularly in agriculture, potentially driving up food prices.

Researchers conclude that immigration is essential for sustaining economic and labor force growth as the U.S.-born population ages. Restricting immigration, they warn, will lower living standards by fueling higher taxes, inflation, and interest rates.
