(Japan Times)Almost half of foreign residents have experienced discrimination: government survey
Release Date
2026-05-19
Media
Japan Times
Summary
A 2025 survey by Japan’s Immigration Services Agency found that 47% of foreign residents had experienced some form of discrimination, most commonly in housing, workplaces, and job searches. Strangers, coworkers, and real estate personnel were identified as frequent sources of discriminatory treatment. Hate speech was also widespread, with many respondents encountering exclusionary or hostile remarks online.
Despite these issues, overall satisfaction with life in Japan remained very high, with 91% expressing satisfaction. Respondents cited Japan’s clean environment, cultural compatibility, and public safety as major positives, while concerns included high living costs, low wages, and discrimination. The survey also showed that most respondents hoped to remain in Japan permanently.
