Summary
Starting in April, three major Japanese airports will introduce new electronic stands to streamline immigration and customs checks. These "joint kiosks" will allow both Japanese travelers and foreign visitors to use a one-stop system, reducing the need to show passports multiple times. Users will need to present a passport and a QR code with immigration and customs details registered in advance on the Visit Japan Web platform.

Foreign passport holders will have their faces and fingerprints taken, while Japanese citizens will only have their photo taken. The kiosks will improve convenience and shorten processing times. However, foreign nationals with medium- to long-term residency in Japan are not eligible to use the kiosks, as the system cannot process their embarkation and disembarkation data.

After a trial at Haneda Airport, the system will expand to other airports. The new technology will debut at Kansai International Airport on March 31, Haneda's terminals 2 and 3 on April 4 and 11, respectively, and Narita Airport's terminal 3 on April 7.
